The Federal Fibre Mills was built in 1907 and used for the production of rope, largely for ships in port. It is estimated that two million people came through the doors of the Federal Fibre Mills during the World’s Fair in 1984 and then began the transformation of the abandoned Warehouse District into a vibrant residential and commercial community. The developers utilized the World Fair to showcase their building, making it home to a folk life exhibit, a night club, restaurants and later on the upsurge of museums, art galleries, and hotels. While one million dollars was spent on initial clean-up, the renovations included detailed preservation and water-blasting of the building’s tan bricks and Southern yellow pine, regarding a dock high floor that allowed for apartments with loft bedrooms, and conversion of two floors into three levels. A penthouse was added to the roof and generated substantial additional square footage. All together there are 132 luxury apartments amongst the Mill’s 132,000 square foot property. Amenities include a pool, high-end lobby with 5 story atrium, clock tower, courtyards and an adjacent park.
